Porirua Computers in Homes for Refugees - Graduation 62

The most recent graduation for Computers in Home for Refugees in Porirua was on 18 April 2015.

This class had 12 refugee students - x9 from Syria, x2 from Afghanistan and one Burmese. With so many Arabic speakers it made sense to tutor directly in Arabic if possible. Ibrahim Raouf-Morton (Eygptian) was able to do this superbly.

New Learning - New Opportunities

The Graduation on 1 April was definitely no April Fools! For many it represented new opportunities for learning and working for them and their families. 41 people graduated from the first course of Computers in Homes of 2015 in Porirua. Porirua City Council Chief Executive, Gary Simpson, presented the certificates to the excited graduates

Previously a teacher and secondary school principal, I am passionate about addressing issues of inequality and injustice.

I believe Computers in Homes is one of the only programmes that helps bridge the learning relationship between home and school, while at the same time, helping to bridge the digital divide.

The Porirua City Community IT Education Trust (PCCITET), more widely known as e-Learning Porirua, was established in 2001.

The Trust aims to help bridge the digital divide (this aim is a catch cry and part of our logo) by training families in computer skills to give them the confidence and tools to gain a job and therefore reduce unemployment, while also improving students achievement levels in the City’s low decile schools.

Between July 2014 and June 2015, we helped 1,760 families from 378 schools and kura. We've helped over 15,000 families since we started.
